Ebola kills another person in Kasese, Uganda

Another person who tested positive of Ebola in Kasese has died.

The deceased is the grandmother to the five-year-old boy who succumbed to the same disease on Tuesday night.

Dr Yusuf Baseke the Kasese District Health Officer says the old woman who has been undergoing treatment at the Ebola Treatment Unit at Bwera Hospital in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha town council died on Wednesday evening.

Her death came barely hours after the government of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo agreed to repatriate six Ebola victims to the DRC.

Gastor Tshapande, the head of the Congolese delegation who also doubles as the coordinator of Ebola Response Centre at Beni in the DRC said the victims were meant to receive specialised treatment from a team of experts in the DRC.

The agreement had however ruled out any possibility of repatriating the dead body of any person who succumbs to the disease in Uganda. This means the number of patients to be repatriated to the DRC has reduced to five.

The five are still being monitored at Bwera Hospital awaiting repatriation on Thursday.

The Minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng revealed that Uganda considered the repatriation since the victims have many of their family members in the DRC.

Aceng added that DRC had also achieved experience in managing the disease having grappled with the viral disease for ten months.

More than 2000 Congolese nationals have succumbed to Ebola that first broke out at Mangina in North Kivu Province of the DRC in August 2018.

Meanwhile, two other people who presented Ebola-like symptoms in Kasese have also been taken to Bwera Hospital.

Dr Loice Kabyanga the case management officer in charge of Ebola at the facility said much as the suspects did not have any history of contact with the confirmed cases, they presented symptoms like vomiting, red eyes and gasping blood.

They include a resident of Kyalhumba sub-county who was admitted at the facility on Tuesday while the other who hails from Kahendero fishing village in Kasese district was admitted to Bwera Hospital on Wednesday evening.
