One dead in Bugiri as Uganda police fire on supporters escorting MP aspirant Asuman

Uganda Police in a newly created Bugiri Municipality  opened fire on supporters  escorting Counsel Asuman Bassalirwa , Bugiri Municipality member of parliament aspirant  on Thursday, 19th July 2018  , killing at least one  person and injuring many  in an ominous escalation of the Bugiri’s  election campaign crisis.

For the first time Uganda police fired at supporters of Asuman which erupted into a protest from opposition members as an  attempt to prevent Mr Asuman from proceeding to address his rallies .

However according to Mityana Muncipality Mp Hon Zaake Francis Butebi  an NRM insider revealed to him that the bullet that ended a 25 year old Asuman Walyendo was intended to end the life of Jeema’s leader counsel Asuman Bassarilwa who was campaigning through the municipality as days to the final election approach.

Helmeted police used teargas, water cannon and live fire to disperse his crowds  along streets of Bugiri leading to injuries and loss of life.

However Uganda Police  is yet to respond to allegations that  they had not used live ammunition and were responsible for none of the deaths. Journalists of Whisper Eye and witnesses who saw Ausman Walyendo body  say it had  a bullet wound.

 

Supporters of Hajji Asuman  and  civil rights groups have condemned the actions  that led to a loss of there supporter in what many see as an indication that the ruling NRM party is using police to influence the out come the  elections.
